Introduction to Tropical Boho Fashion
There's something about Costa Rica that feels like the perfect match for a boho soul lush — jungle mornings, barefoot beach sunsets, and a rhythm that reminds you to slow down and live Pura Vida. As the weather cools back home, I packed my favorite fall-meets-tropical pieces for a warm escape full of color, texture, and easy boho vibes. When planning a trip to Costa Rica, one of the most delightful aspects is choosing the perfect outfit that balances comfort and style. As a boho traveler, my goal was to seamlessly transition from sun-kissed beaches to vibrant dinner spots without sacrificing my love for fashion. This guide outlines my essential packing list and some of my favorite athleisure looks that capture the spirit of tropical boho fashion.
The Essentials: Light, Flowy & Easy to Layer

Lightweight midi or maxi dresses: Perfect for transitioning from day to night, a flowing maxi dress in vibrant colors embodies the bohemian aesthetic.
Wide Leg Pants: Breathable & Lightweight such as linen, cotton, or rayon let air flow freely. Great to protect your legs without trapping heat, also perfect for travel, and can be a versatile day-to-night piece.
Crochet or Lace Top: Perfect for layering over swimwear, easy to dress up or down and lightweight for packing.
Athleisure activewear: Look for breathable fabrics and fun prints that can easily transition from hiking in the lush forests or yoga in a serene outdoor studio to enjoying a casual dinner by the shore.
Linen Romper or Jumpsuit: A linen romper or jumpsuit is the easiest way to look put together with zero efforts and it's perfect for traveling, especially between beaches, towns or jungle adventures.
Swimwear: Incorporate unique patterns or textures; a chic swimsuit that serves as a top can effortlessly take you from the beach to an evening out.
Layering pieces: A lightweight kimono or a denim jacket for cooler evenings adds an extra boho flair to any outfit or dress coverup. Or a lightweight scarf that doubles as a wrap or even swimsuit coverup.
Accessories:
Wide-brimmed hats and oversized sunglasses complete the boho traveler look while providing sun protection.
Woven Tote + crossbody bag + durable water-resistant backpack
Statement earrings (shells, woods or beads)
Shoes:
Lightweight sneakers for exploring and/or hiking.
By incorporating these essential items into your suitcase, you can stay stylish and comfortable throughout your adventures.
From Forest to Shore: Beach-to-Dinner Looks
Costa Rica's allure goes beyond its stunning landscapes; it offers a vibrant culture that deserves to be matched with equally striking outfits. After a day at the beach, I often opted for a quick change into a lightweight mini dress, a chic maxi dress or an off-the-shoulder top paired with linen shorts. Either option created a breezy and effortlessly stylish appearance, perfect for enjoying local seafood dinners or sunset strolls on the beach.
Accessorizing is key for those sought-after boho vibes. Statement earrings, layered necklaces, and colorful bangles added a personal touch to my outfits. The tropical setting of Costa Rica calls for bold colors and playful prints, so don't shy away from mixing and matching your pieces to create unique looks.
One of my favorite things about Costa Rica is how the vibe naturally shifts from adventure to relaxation — and your outfits should do the same.
Morning:
→ Exploring waterfalls or hiking trails — I wore athletic shorts, lightweight top, with with my swimsuit underneath or sports bra, comfortable hiking shoes and a lightweight backpack to carry my water bottle, a quick drying towel and my GoPro to capture the adventure!
Afternoon:
→ Beach time! A bikini under a crochet cover-up and statement shell jewelry felt carefree yet polished.
→ Exploring the town— I wore a linen romper, strappy sandals, and a woven crossbody bag (hands-free and practical).
Evening:
→ Dinner with a view — I swapped my cover-up for a flowy maxi dress with gold accents. Add a pair of strappy sandals and it’s effortlessly elevated.
